The Royal Warrant

The Royal Warrant

On October 26, 1915, when visiting his troops in France, King George V fell victim to an unfortunate accident: his horse, excited by the cheering crowds lining the streets, reared and fell, causing severe straining to the King's back.

On his return to England, the King was advised by his physicians to sleep on a Staples bed - the unique construction of which had already demonstrated its superiority in maintaining correct spinal support, which we now recognize as being an essential ingredient in healthy, restful sleep. The fact that written permission had been given to the state that the bed had "given satisfaction" to the King was used in all literature and advertisements by the Company. In the ensuing years similar beds were supplied to several of the Royal residences.

In 1932 a Royal Appointment was granted by King George and has been graciously renewed by each successive monarch including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Staples beds played their part in British history. During the World War II speciality Staples beds were required, including one for the Prime Minister Winston Churchill for whom a sound night’s sleep was essential; later a similar model was ordered for his home at Chartwell.

Another “special” order which was executed in 1943 was for a feather weight bed to fit in the aircraft of Air Marshal Cunningham and similar equipment was used in a Dakota for Sir Sholto Douglas and General Montgomery.

After the war, one of Company’s first orders was for a bedstead and mattress for H.M. King George VI, for whom Staples had first made a bed in 1929 when he was still Prince George. Several replicas were later ordered for the Royal residences.

In the last 5 years we have been an active supplier to Royal Households and have procured natural fillings from organic British farms including His Royal Highness Prince Charles’ organic Duchy Home Farm.

Staples continues to be one of the key manufacturers of quality, handmade beds in the UK with a long tradition of craftsmanship.

Mattresses

All Staples mattresses are individually upholstered by craftsmen. Support comes from pocketed springs and a vast array of natural fillings.

Traditional Tufting

This is especially important when securing the generous quantities of fillings employed, especially on the more lavish models. The borders of all models are reinforced with hand side stitching, to give edge to edge support thus prolonging the life of the mattress.

Zipping & Linking

Mattresses are available as optional zip and link units allowing each partner to choose the tension of mattress most suited to their comfort and support requirements.

Divan Bases & Drawers

All Staples divans can be supplied with drawers without loss of comfort. Staples drawers run with silky smoothness on high quality steel runners for easy use.
